What's new?? Altered Art Jewelry

Altered Art is a broad term that encompasses many styles and genres of art.  At it's most basic, it gives new life to old or used items thru the application of various techniques, some recognized as standard artistic methods, some not.  The result may serve both a functional purpose as well as a creative and artistic piece.  Its increasing popularity reflects the diversity of its influences and the artist's staring point.  Some start as painters or collage artists, of from within some other well-known school of art.  Many crafty people, whether fiber crafters (knitting & crochet), scrapbooker, stampers and card maker, find their way to altered art.  Sometimes, a collector of a certain item from postage stamps to thimbles to toys, will want a new way to display or use their treasures, and discover that they are actually dabbling in altered art.

The results are as varied as the influences; tag books, bottle cap jewelry, journals, shadow boxes, shrines, works to commemorate special occasions or themes such as family history, weddings, etc.

In my case I use photos and collages, together with antique earring and pendants pieces as well as glass and lucite, to make unique and one of a kind jewelry.  I've been on a romantic kick lately and have done several pendants and necklaces with a Parisienne theme.  Pictures of the Eiffel Tower, cozy french cafes embellished with Swarovski crystals, vintage lucite beads,  and flowers, etc.

I am also doing a series of Old Hollywood Glamour, that will feature legends of music and silver screen.  To the right you can see some earrings I made with portraits of Jean Harlow.  I am also doing some wonderful cuff links for the guys with glass and portaits and record album covers of musicians and singers of the 40s and 50s like Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller and Louis Armstrong.

Remember, the Holidays are fast approaching and these would make wonderful gifts that will surely be cherished for a long time.
